Twelve months. Twelve different materials. One flatbed scanner used as a camera. Calendar 2024 is a series that began from a simple constraint and became its own visual language: what happens to an everyday object when you press it onto a glass surface, hold it still, and let the scan head move across it?
Fabric, a water bottle, a pen, my own hands and braids, placed directly on the scanner bed and sometimes moved mid-scan, so that time and motion become part of the image. The results range from something that reads like aerial landscape photography, to ink wash, calligraphy, deep-sea texture. Each month is a different material, a different quality of movement, a different decision about what to give the machine and what to hold back.
What drew me to the scanner as a medium is the detail it forces you into. High resolution reveals texture the eye does not naturally stop to see: the weave of a fabric, the braid structure of hair, the refraction of water in a plastic bottle. There is something honest about working this way: no camera, no lighting, no staging. Just the object, the glass, and what happens in the space between.
